The boxes on a train are commonly referred to as "freight cars" or "boxcars....but everybody has some of their own names for it and there is quite a variety of others like "coal cars" and "gondola" and others." These the ones that are the "boxes" are enclosed units designed to transport goods and cargo, protecting them from weather and theft during transit....and are typically called "freight cars" or "boxcars". For model trains, once you get your grandkids into the mix, they'll make ALL kinds of other names for them...which is part of the fun:)
